Who is Jesus? The answer to that question is really important. Once we understand who He is, it hugely impacts how we live. He promises “Life to the FULL”, and who doesn’t want that? So, who did Jesus claim to be? Who does the Bible say He is? First, let’s look at Jesus’ words in John 10:30, “I and the Father are one.” At first glance, this might not seem to be a claim to be God. However, look at His opponent’s reaction to His statement, “‘We are not stoning you for any good work,’ they replied, ‘but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God’” (John 10:33). The Jews understood Jesus’ statement as a claim to be God and Jesus didn’t correct them. In fact, He always affirmed it. Jesus is God.
John 1:1 says, “the Word was God.” John 1:14 says, “the Word became flesh.” This clearly indicates that Jesus is God in the flesh. Thomas the disciple declared to Jesus, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). Jesus doesn’t correct him. The apostle Paul describes Him as, “…our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). The apostle Peter says the same, “…our God and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:1).
Jesus is God and His desire is to have a relationship with us. That longing for something more that we all have, the emptiness we feel, is put in our lives by Him. The Creator made His creation to be in relationship with Him. Until we realize it’s Him we’re longing for, no matter what we do, we will always feel like something is missing in our lives. Our jobs, relationships, hobbies or money can’t give us the sense of fulfillment we’re longing for. Only the Creator can do that. He’s not just somewhere out there, He wants to have a personal, intimate relationship with us. When we acknowledge that it’s Jesus we need, that we need Him as our Saviour, then all we need to do is invite Him to be in our lives and ask Him to forgive us of all our mistakes, selfishness and sin. He then wipes away all the pain, shame and guilt and makes us into the person we were always meant to be. You, but better! Jesus makes us really come alive! You can invite Him into your life today.
